How To Upholster A Headboard

Ever wonder how to make your own headboard? Well read this post and I'll teach you how.
 Supplies needed:
 1" Plywood
1" foam
batting
 staple gun
 jigsaw
fabric
nailheads

 Start of with measuring your plywood. This was for a twin bed, I measured the bed and added an inch on each side. Next pick your shape you want. We went with the Belgrave.

Now lay your plywood out I used a bowl to get the circle shape on the ends then traced it on to paper.

Next take your paper and trace it onto the wood.

Take your jigsaw and just follow the line you just traced.

This line on the bottom of the headboard is my cut off point for foam. Foam is the most expensive part of this project, so it's nice to save a little money here.

Trace your foam using your plywood as a guide. Then use liquid nails and attach the foam to the plywood.  You can cut the foam with a kitchen knife.

Again this is where my foam stopped on the bottom.

Get your batten and place over the foam your going to wrap it around the back and staple it in.  It's easier to get around the curves if you make V-like slits as you go around the curves.

Now attach your fabric the same way. I covered the fabric all the way down the whole headboard. Yes I know the back of this doesn't look pretty. But it's okay no one will ever see it.

Here's the headboard with all the layers on. Soon I'll post about adding nailheads to your headboard.

Meet Sarah Swanson

Sarah is a fabulous designer and I wanted to show you her lovely home. She blogs over at Flourish Design + Style. I'm so excited to have her here today.

Tell us a little about yourself?

I'm a designer, blogger and Mommy from Calgary Alberta. Just about a month ago I was able to leave my day job to focus on my design business full time. SO exciting! My days are filled doing what I love and I couldn't be happier! I'm busy doing design boards for clients all across Canada and the US. I've been happily surprised by the success of my etsy shop Gallery Wall.. I wanted to give people an inexpensive bold art option that was fun. Gallery Wall offers original water colors for $10. Easy and fun!

What's Your Personal Style?

My personal style is going through a slight change right now.. I've always loved clean classic and tailored. Now I'm shifting to casual, relaxed and really monochromatic. My house now has layers and layers of cream and white and tan.. it's turning into such a calm space for me, which as a mom who now works from home I need! 

What is your favorite project of all time?

My favorite project right now is our own bathroom.. when we built our house 3 years ago, the main floor little bathroom was truly a builder basic nightmare. We are in the process of renovating the whole room.. new marble tile has gone in, I've picked out a great light fixture, an incredible gold faucet from Delta.. I'm really excited for it to be finished so after 3 years I can finally love the space!

Abstract Art

I haven't always been a huge fan of abstract art, but lately I seem obsessed with it. I wanted something for my wall in my bedroom. And I had an old canvas lying around so I thought I would try to make something. 

These are the colors I'm using.  Which is also the color scheme for my master bedroom.

Ahh wish me luck I've already started and it's much harder then I imagined.

Spring Has Sprung!

Oh I can't tell you how excited I am for spring to be here!I love everything about spring, the lovely flowers, rain showers, the warm weather which means lots of walks to the park. What's better then that? Here's some yummy things to spruce up your house this spring.

How about sprucing up your home with this lovely chair? It would look great in a living room or bedroom. Perfect for soring.

I would love to add these bowls to my collection, I can just imagine eating my cereal out of these colorful bowls and smiling while I admire how adorable they are.

I love these throw pillows made with fabric by David Hicks. They would just spruce up your home and bring a little spring in. 

 

I really love all of Michelle Armas's paintings. There abstract, colorful and pretty. I'm lusting over this one.

Have you see these pretty peg furniture legs? They're furniture legs you swap out for with your old boring IKEA legs. They're such a great product to spruce up an IKEA piece of furniture. I want the bright pink ones!

Learn How To Glaze Furniture

 Want to learn how to glaze furniture? Read on....

I'll show you how.

Start with this wood stain in walnut. The stain is water base and sooo easy to work with. The walnut is also the perfect color and goes with just about any color of paint.
When glazing don't be worried about getting it perfect. Glazing is all about making something look worn and imperfect so just embrace all the tiny imperfections!

Depending on how much you wipe off is how heavily glazed it will look. I did a really light glaze, if you want a heavier look just don't wipe off as much or you could do another coat.

Now, finish off with 2-3 coats of a water-based polycyclic. Lightly sand between coats of polycyclic and you done!

Rocker Transformation

 Bryn's grandpa found this little rocker at the goodwill and bought it for her. I wasn't a huge fan of the wood color in her room so I painted it. I chose a bright teal blue, then glazed it, ahhh much better. It's the only pop of turquoise in her room, but that's kinda why I like it so much. I always love one odd piece in a room.

 Painted in Krylon Blue Ocean Breeze. Try not to judge my messy garage, spring cleaning here I come.

 It only took me a year to get it painted, but with this nice warm weather I couldn't resist.
