DIY Monogrammed Pillow

As you can see I revamped my blog over the weekend, I'm still in the process of some more updates.

Now onto this yummy pillow! This is my first time sewing a pillow. It was super easy to do. There are no zippers involved it's just a simple envelope pillow cover. That way you can take it off for easy cleaning. Think of all the possibilities you could do any color or shape. I made this for around $5, I used an old pillow insert I already had on hand. All the fabric is broadcloth which I found it on sale at Hobby Lobby and I was able to use a 40% off coupon.
I was inspired by this pillow from Etsy.
I was also helped by this tutorial by the Crafty Gemini. I found though the measurements worked better if I made them a little bit bigger in the back.

Supplies needed for an 18" x 18" pillow:
1/2 yard of main fabric
1/2 yard of white fabric
1/3-1/2 yard of orange fabric depending on the size of your letter
If your doing a different size pillow you'll need to adjust your fabric size
Ruler
Rotary cutter or scissors
Pins
Cutting matte
Coordinating thread
Pillow Form

First off, my pillow form was 18" x 18". If you're doing a different size pillow, you can still do this. Just cut the front piece 1 inch bigger then your pillow form. So if you have a 12" x 12" cut the fabric to 13" x 13". On the back piece cut an extra inch on one side and 6" bigger on the other. So the back piece would be 13" x 19".

Cut the front piece one inch bigger then your pillow form. I did 19"x 19". Next cut the back piece 19"x 25". Then cut the back piece in half. The halfway measurement of mine was 12.5". Now, cut it straight down the middle. Do I still have you? I know it get's a little tricky here, but let me know if you have questions! mm k? I know it's a lot of measuring and cutting stay with me.

This is the 19" x 19" piece.

Cut the back piece 19"x 25". Then cut the back piece in half. So measure 12.5" on each side and cut straight down the middle.

So you'll have 1, 19 x19 piece and 2 12.5" pieces.

Next, hem a 1/4'' seam down one side of each piece of fabric of the 12.5" back pieces. Fold 1/4" in then fold again. Iron and pin. Then start sewing. Make sure your hem is folded over on the wrong side of the fabric.

Now get 4 pieces of regular size paper and tape them together. Were going to make a template for the white shape. Make it a 16"x16" size square. Fold into fourths grab something circular I used a bowl and cut out a semi circle in the corner that goes through all four pieces of paper.

Now you have your shape. Double up your white fabric and lay the template on it. Pin it onto the white fabric and cut out.

Your wanting 2 pieces of the white fabric  sewn together like this. Now face the right sides together pin and sew around the edges. Leave a small corner open so you can turn it right side out.

Tuck in the opening and iron.

Iron it flat and pin onto the blue front piece fabric. Begin sewing the entire white shape onto the blue.

Next,  print out a G and pin it onto the orange fabric then cut it all out. You could do any font you would like, but the simpler the better. Remember you have to sew around all those curves. Again, you want the orange fabric double sided so cut two pieces just like the white.

Place the right sides of the G together and sew all around again leaving enough space to turn inside out. Iron it flat, then turn right sides out and sew all around once again.
Next pin the G onto the pillow.

Sew the G onto the white.

Now put the right sides together of the front and back piece of the pillow. and pin all around the edge. (sorry my iron was leaving water on everything)

Now pin all the way around and sew.

Turn inside out and put in your pillow form. And just like that your done! Let me know if you have any questions.

Not bad for $5 bucks huh?
